Two historic, industrial buildings, constructed in 1907 and 1925, are situated in close proximity to the river Spree and the Schloss Charlottenburg. The buildings have been abandoned for many years and its revitalisation includes the reconstruction, expansion and conversion into 57 high-quality loft units with approx. 7.000 sqm living space. The large variety of apartment types results in a balanced mixture of inhabitants with different social backgrounds and in various phases of life. The existing buildings that are setback from the street will be restored and the facade with its symmetry will be reconstructed. Two new buildings will extend the historic structure symmetrical on both sides. The ensemble encompasses a courtyard that opens to the street and the river beyond, so the historic buildings are being exposed to the public in order to experience the history of the site as a former production facility. A subterranean garage with 26 parking spaces is located underneath the courtyard. The two new buildings along the street complete the surrounding streetblock in a subtle manner. By partial demolition of the existing building along the western property line the courtyard of the adjacent building will be enlarged thus improving the indoor environmental quality and the natural lighting of the neighboring apartments.Green, open community space, private gardens for the ground floor townhouses as well as spacious, green roof terraces offer the inhabitants additional space for recreation.
