The small coastal State of Djibouti is located in a strategic position at the Horn of Africa. The country with 370 km coastline is planning to develop the port of its capital into the largest hub of East Africa. This also includes the development of the Middle river deltas of the Ambouli. A master plan was developed for this area by a Chinese investor, which foresees as a first project the construction of a shopping mall with cinema, supermarket and shops. Later, apartments, hotels and office units are to follow. CollignonArchitektur was tasked with the planning of the shopping center. The Chinese clients demanded a sustainable building concept. The design had to consider in particular the climatic conditions: in addition to the intense heat and drought (only 163 mm of rain per year), there are also hardly any seasonal differences and no prevailing winds in Djibouti. Our design creates a partially shaded forecourt in front of the cinema with gastronomy, the two-storey Mall with a large market and several shops. The elements of its open space design, as well as the cooling pools make this square an important meeting point at the entrance to the newly developed area.An overhanging, raised-on shade roof over the steel structure of the building supplies protection from the sun and ventilation underneath. The roof is equipped with photovoltaic elements that supply the energy required for the air conditioning of the Interior. As a local building material clay is used for the façade.
