Residential

Close to the historic town centre of Lahr, a district town at the western edge of the “Black Forest”, a partially built city block is to be developed by adding an underground garage and residential buildings. The central theme of the design is the idea of the open city block. The design is based on the scale and structure of the historic town. The new residential quarter along Goethestrasse is composed of singular cubes of varying height and length. As a result the buildings achieve an individual identity and views to the inside of the city block are made possible. The buildings are offset from each other allowing for individual areas at the entries of the retail and residential spaces. The offsetting of the buildings also creates various types of open space with distinctive features on the inside of the city block. The main orientation of all apartments is towards the east and the west while also having an additional orientation towards the alleyways on the south or the north side of each building. The positioning of the building cores allows for flexible apartment sizes on each floor. The interior fitout is flexible and can be adjusted to the requests of the owner. The design of the new development is in harmony with the simple cubic architecture that shapes the townscape which is being interpreted in a modern fashion. The openings in the facade are positioned in a grid and align on top of each other however this conventional grid is changing deliberately to show the individuality of the living spaces beyond.Especially the "Sun House" is based on a future-oriented energy concept. The electric energy supply of the building is provided by renewable energy and the energy consumption is being reduced by the use of an advanced insulation system and a monitored heat recovery system. A geothermal heating and cooling system is being installed underneath the slab providing heating during winter and cooling during summer. An external shading system protects the interior from excessive solar radiation. The large windows towards the south provide additional solar heat gain during winter.

The openings in the facade are positioned in a grid and align on top of each other however this conventional grid is changing deliberately to show the individuality of the living spaces beyond.

Especially the "Sun House" is based on a future-oriented energy concept.
