International Competition, 2nd Place This prize winning competition design for the German pavilion at the Expo 2000 contains a 360° cinema, with 42 meters diameter, the related "Pre-show" and waiting areas as well as large exhibition spaces. It displays a highly symbolic image connected to the theme of the Expo "Humankind-Nature-Technology". The shape of the building, which is inspired by models from nature, is based on the central circular cinema, the innovative Green ventilation system and by strategies of visitor flow management. The resulting architecture with its dynamic expression is complimented by the rich and lively texture of the façade and is based on a precise geometry. The shape of the building with it’s imbricated façade functions as a type of "wind-paddle-wheel", a kind of static wind turbine, open in all directions. It provides a natural ventilation system using thermal and aerodynamic low-pressure systems, activating the thermal buffer effect of solid structural floor slabs. At peak times (Expo) additional mechanical by heating and cooling ceilings is used. The central rotunda with it’s "Frisbee-roof" made of translucent pneumatically tensioned membranes acts as a thermodynamic ventilation stack, creating negative pressure even under light wind conditions.Lightweight constructions are used for material and energy savings for the atrium and the rotunda roof. The large span entrance facades are built from tensioned membrane façade systems. Shading and darkening elements are made from local timber. The holistic sustainable concept of the building allows for a commercial use after the Expo period, a building with a natural energy saving ventilation system and a unique quality of spaces. After removal of the specific Expo fit out a functional building with two atria is left for the future, suitable for a variety of office, research, educational or exhibition purposes.
