International Competition, 6th place, 2000 The situation in a central industrial area of Turin, its uses as library, theatre and cultural institute, all suggest an inward-looking building. Its presence becomes the city's new landmark. The prominent, city-facing "atrium" serves as a meeting place with an exciting experiential quality, an observation platform and as a symbol, which is effective from far away. It functions, together with the two large inner courtyards, as the central circulation zone and forms, with its double glass skin, the "thermal engine" of a natural ventilation system. The clear, structured design of the building complex, which has a variety of sequential spaces, takes its vitality from the interplay between transparent and closed surfaces.
