The city library, on former railway land, was envisaged as the first public building of the "Stuttgart 21" Project. The central design concept was the (re)interpretation of a library in the Internet Age as a place of meeting and interaction. To achieve this an open inner space, full of possibilities for experiencing and interacting, was created within a maximised built volume.A glazed double skin facade was developed for the building, with inset horizontal wooden slats ("book-shelf", "horizontal hold’ lines"), as well as an innovative natural ventilation design.
